In the fall of 2022, I studied architecture abroad in Vicenza, Italy. I carried this sketchbook with me everywhere I went during my semester abroad. With it, I captured pieces of the beautiful places I saw and rediscovered my love of drawing.
We concluded the semester with a sketching thesis. I studied the shadows moving across Andrea Palladio’s Piazza dei Signori.

For my sketching thesis, I documented the sun’s movement throughout the day around Piazza dei Signori over the course of 3 months. I studied through drawing high contrasts of light and shadow to inform materiality, texture, and scale. This abstracted collage connects spaces by similar elements and registration, even if they were not physically next to one another.
The changing light gave me a comprehensive understanding of how differently public spaces feel at the ground level. It showed me the importance of allowing light to hit the ground and constructing awe inspiring architecture.
